64.5°F at 5:00amOn June 22, 2006 the temperature reached a scorching high of 80.1 degrees at 3:28 PM in the afternoon according to the weather station at North Carolina's mountain resort called the Preserve at Wolf Laurel www.wolflaurel.com In this 4,500 foot elevation community where golf is sometimes played with a light jacket in the mornings and a blanket is often needed on the outside deck when the sun goes down, this was a record heat day for the season.
Wolf Laurel Resort was still lucky as Greenville, SC, about 80 miles south reached a record high of 99 degrees, and Columbus, Georgia reached a record high of 100 degrees. Even the nearby mountain tourist city of Asheville almost 2,500 feet lower in elevation down in the valley reached 89.9 degrees.
The fact is, millions of Southerners are escaping record heat, humidity, global warming, hurricanes and the "heat island" effect of large cities here in the high mountain region of North Carolina. Also today, the National Academy of Sciences claims The Earth's Hottest It's Been in 2,000 Years. Is it any wonder why tourists and second home buyers are heading to the high mountains of North Carolina.
On June 20th in the Christian Science Monitor, it was reported: "Today, the (NC) mountains are seeing a "perfect confluence" for mountaintop development, as hurricane insurance costs have tripled in Florida over the last year due to the hurricanes and Americans are looking for more security post-9/11, says James Chung of Reach Advisors, a consumer research firm in Boston.
As the overall real estate market slowly cools, high-end resort development is booming, experts say. For example, in 2000, just over 500,000 vacation homes were sold. That figure tipped 1 million homes for the first time last year, according to Reach Advisors."
